News Editor - SooToday.com

Village Media

Do you believe in the importance of digital-first, hyperlocal news coverage?

Village Media — a proudly independent, digital-first network of local news sources across Ontario — is searching for a talented, dynamic journalist to serve as the next News Editor of SooToday, our flagship site. This full-time position, based at Village Media’s head office in Sault Ste. Marie, is a rare opportunity to lead one of the most-read local news sources in North America. We have built something amazing over the past 22 years: an indispensable news outlet dedicated to strengthening the community through top-notch reporting. Our goal now is to take that journalism to the next level — with you leading the way.

As our name indicates, the primary mission of SooToday is to tell people what’s happening TODAY. Although our team of reporters is always chipping away at in-depth, enterprising stories, our main focus is to inform our readers about what is happening right now — and why it matters. Our newsroom is aggressive, nimble and driven by a constant sense of urgency. We chase the stories people are talking about (or should be talking about) and tell them those important stories with authority and accuracy.

Who You Are

• You believe journalism can be a powerful force that helps strengthen communities

• You understand the importance of vibrant local journalism and the impact it has on people’s day-to-day lives

• You are committed to understanding the community you serve and the issues it faces

• You are a thinker, innovator and collaborative leader

• You have excellent news judgment and thrive in a fast-paced, up-to-the-second environment

• You live for breaking news situations that require a quarterback’s mentality

• You confirm and publish stories quickly, jump on timely updates and spot fresh angles that keep readers coming back for more

• You know how to mine social media for stories, sources, questions and topics that the community is talking about

• You have a knack for spotting engaging story ideas and angles that most people miss

• You have a passion for all types of stories, from hard news to soft features and everything in between

• You are a team player who accepts constructive feedback

• You know how to squeeze the best out of people

• You are fair, accurate and transparent

Your Skills are Learned and Earned

Ideally, you have a bachelor’s degree or diploma in journalism, or a related field. You have at least five years of experience in a newsroom setting. You have exceptional writing and editing skills and a thorough knowledge of CP style. You have the ability to build strong relationships with colleagues inside our Village and within the communities we serve. You have a valid driver’s licence and a reliable vehicle. Familiarity with Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and the surrounding area will be considered a strong asset, but not a dealbreaker.

This is not a remote position. The job of News Editor at SooToday is based at Village Media’s head office in downtown Sault Ste. Marie. The successful candidate must either live in Sault Ste. Marie or be willing to relocate.

If this sounds like the perfect position for you, we’d love to hear from you! To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume and references, along with relevant samples of your work.
