The Coronation Medal is the first Canadian commemorative medal to mark a coronation.

Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill MP Leah Taylor Roy is seeking nominations for a new service medal dedicated to King Charles III.

The medals, announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau back in May 2023 ahead of the coronation, are being presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to Canada.

"Community members are invited to nominate individuals who have made a meaningful difference in their community for this distinction," wrote Taylor Roy in a news release on social media.

"Nominations should focus on the achievements of persons who have helped build the Canada of today — youth, volunteers, educators and health-care workers, for instance, who have demonstrated a high degree of professionalism in their field and/or have brought great credit to Canada."

Taylor Roy's office asks nominations to be submitted by Sept. 15. Those who would like to make a nomination can email [email protected], with a written outline not exceeding 450 words.

The federal governor general is administering the medal program, which marks the coronation of King Charles III on May 6, 2023. In total, 30,000 medals will be given to deserving individuals, with 4,000 of those going to members of the Canadian Armed Services.

The medal is struck in nickel-silver and lacquered to prevent tarnishing. It is manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Newmarket-Aurora MP Tony Van Bynen’s office is also seeking nominations from members of the community.

“It is a way to recognize those doing outstanding things,” he said.

His office will accept nominations until Sept. 13. Those who would like to make a nomination can email [email protected], with a written outline not exceeding 450 words.

The Coronation Medal is the first Canadian commemorative medal to mark a coronation.

To be eligible for this honour, a person must:

  • have made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region of, or community in, Canada, or attained an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada; and
  • have been alive on May 6, 2023, the date of The King’s Coronation.
