Newmarket and Aurora vie for the cup in Battle of Yonge Street

Nearly two decades-old tradition continues all weekend as Newmarket Renegades and Aurora Tigers battle it out on the ice

A tradition that began nearly two decades ago continues this weekend as the Newmarket Renegades and Aurora Tigers compete to be the champion of the Battle of Yonge Street.

Games in this home and home weekend take place all weekend at the Magna Centre, Aurora Community Centre and Stronach ARC.

The Renegades are the reigning champions and head into the 17th annual weekend with a 9-7 lead in the series, according the Newmarket Minor Hockey Association communications director Michael Clarke.

"This is an exciting weekend for our athletes, with some friendly competition against our neighbours to the south," he said.

The event also provides a great opportunity to give back to the community and help stock the Newmarket Food Pantry’s shelves, he said.

In partnership with Home & Home Weekend Sponsor Dickie’s No Frills, the NMHA is once again be hosting a food drive at the Magna Centre.

"Last year, we were able to raise over 550 pounds of food. Help us top that this year," Clarke said.

Please ensure that your non-perishable food donations are not past their best before date.
