Two-vehicle collision shut down Newmarket intersection

Investigation continued hours after collision occurred at Mulock, Sandford this morning

A serious two-vehicle collision shut down traffic for hours on a busy road in Newmarket today, as police conducted an investigation.

York Regional Police responded to the incident at about 10 a.m. at the intersection of Mulock Drive and Sandford Street in front of the Sandford Plaza.

A black Mazda and black Toyota collided. The Toyota had its airbags deployed, the trunk opened, and the front end was destroyed. The Mazda had its roof removed, airbags deployed, windows removed, and windshield shattered.

About six cruisers blocked traffic from entering the area at Yonge Street, Bayview Avenue, and both northbound and southbound lanes of Sandford Street. There were three police vans with equipment for officers. Police placed evidence markers on the road while deploying a drone.

Drivers and passengers on York Region Transit Route 57 made their way in alternative routes. The transit authority said on X that it skipped westbound stops 2016 and eastbound stops 2439 and 1994.

The collision occurred on the same day as another incident in town at Davis Drive and Highway 404. Police were on scene for both incidents for the entire afternoon.
