Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas has been voted onto the board of directors of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario at the organization’s annual general meeting, currently taking place in Ottawa.

The non-profit organization represents Ontario’s 444 municipalities, providing municipal leaders with a forum to address shared priorities.

“I’m honoured to have been elected to the AMO board as part of the regional/single-tier caucus. It’s an incredible honour to represent Aurora and York Region and collaborate with municipal leaders from across Ontario,” Mrakas said in a news release.

“I’m excited to bring Aurora’s voice to the table and contribute to the collective efforts that will benefit our residents and municipalities across the province. Together, we’ll work to tackle the challenges that our communities face, drive positive change, and help shape a prosperous future for all of Ontario.”

As a board member, Mrakas will be part of setting the strategic direction for the organization for the next board term, which runs from 2024 to 2026.

Some of the key priorities already outlined include housing and homelessness, infrastructure funding, the opioid epidemic, public safety, climate change, Indigenous engagement, access to health-care services, use of artificial intelligence, among other areas.

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario is in Ottawa from Aug. 18 to 21.
