Sink your teeth into this burger to support scholarships for young women

Newmarket's Ground Burger Bar has created the Grad Burger to support CFUW Aurora/Newmarket's charitable trust

When you take a bite out of the special menu item at Ground Burger Bar, you're supporting young women in Newmarket and Aurora with scholarships.

Newmarket's Ground Burger Bar has created a a mouthwatering masterpiece in support of the Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket.

The restaurant is contributing $5 from each Grad Burger sold to CFUW’s coffers to provide financial assistance to students for their post-secondary pursuits. The club has awarded 16 scholarships worth $3,000 each to outstanding young women graduating from secondary schools in northern York Region since June.

The Grad Burger is available for a limited time, from Sept. 3 until Oct. 3.

“It’s an awesome September option,” said Samantha Buckley, co-owner of Ground Burger Bar. “We do a seasonal change of our menu every season and everybody is constantly asking ‘When are you bringing turkey’? We thought it would be the perfect addition for a September burger.”

“We chose a really awesome transitional burger transitioning from summer to fall that we thought would attract all clientele with a turkey patty, a local, peach chutney homemade, grilled onions, arugula and goat cheese,” Buckley added.

The peach chutney presents notes of spice for a subtle yet noteworthy kick. The burger has a well-balanced profile, as the vegetables, cheese, onions, and arugula sink in your mouth yet don’t overpower one another. You can taste the produce without it comprising or taking away from other ingredients.

“We have a charitable trust at the branch of our club that looks after all the money we raise for scholarships and they distribute the scholarships to young women who are graduating from high schools in the northern part of York Region, Aurora, Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, King, Whitchurch-Stouffville,” said Anne Marie Devine, communications for CFUW. “That is our catchment area.”

The funds for these educational awards are raised through annual home and garden tour and partnerships.

The club has awarded more than 500 scholarships to deserving students from secondary schools in York Region, as well as students at Seneca College and York University since 1957.

“The students need to show they are involved in their school community and, or their home community,” said Devine. “It is not based on marks or highest marks. It is based on financial need.”
