The West Nile Virus has arrived in York Region as public health reports the first human case of the year in Vaughan.

The virus, transmitted from mosquitoes, may not manifest symptoms, but some people will experience a mild, flu-like illness. But the virus can be life-threatening in some instances.

York Region acting medical officer of health Dr. Fareen Karachiwalla said you can take simple steps to reduce the risks of getting bitten by an infected mosquito outdoors.

Use insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin, wear light-coloured protective clothing when outdoors, and remove standing water around your home in places such as flowerpots, swimming pool covers, bird baths and containers, Karachiwalla said in a news release.

The virus has remained present but sporadic in Ontario over the years. In 2022, there were 23 cases confirmed in humans in Ontario, which went up to 54 cases in 2023, according to Public Health Ontario. There have been 16 cases confirmed in Ontario this year based on the agency’s data, which excludes any travel-related cases before mosquito season.

The region said mosquito activity varies from year to year and it is important to know not all mosquitoes carry the virus.

“The risk to residents remains low,” the region said.

Annually, the region’s control plan includes mosquito control and surveillance.

Symptoms of the virus can include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, severe headaches, light sensitivity and, in rare cases, neurological illness. The region advises anyone with these symptoms should seek medical attention.

York Region is not releasing any personal details of the case for privacy reasons.
