IN PHOTOS: Thousands fill Yonge for ever popular Aurora Street Festival

Despite the early morning downpour, the community turned out in droves for the annual festival

The crowds came out for one of the biggest events in town Sunday, Aurora's annual downtown street festival.

Thousands of people came out to stroll along Yonge Street, which was closed to vehicles for the occasion from Wellington Street and Murray Drive, for the vendors, street performers and live music lined up on both sides of the street.

Aurora mother-daughter duo Lori, 63, and Jennifer North, 34, regularly make the festival part of their summer fun.

“I think we’ve only missed one or two since you were what, the age of three?” Lori said to daughter Jennifer.

“Yeah, we haven’t missed very many recently,” agreed Jennifer.

The Aurora Chamber of Commerce has been organizing the street festival for more than 25 years, since it first began as a community garage sale. It is now York Region’s largest community event, organizers say, held annually on the first Sunday in June.

Around seven millimetres of rain fall the morning of the festival, according to Statistics Canada. But conditions soon dried out and did not deter the crowds of people who literally filled the street.

Richmond Hill resident Brenda North, 70, said she was relieved the rain had cleared up, but was also thankful it was cooler than it had been in previous years.

“It often was the hottest day of the year,” said Brenda North who was also helping out at the Aurora Optimist Club’s tent.

Organizers said there were more than 500 vendors at the event, with the Community Craft Beer festival, happening inside the Law Insurance parking lot, also being a popular stop along the road.
